La Game Boy Color (GBC) fue la consola portátil de 8 bits desarrollada por Nintendo y lanzada al mercado a finales de 1998 en Japón, Norteamérica y Europa. Concebida como la sucesora directa de la emblemática Game Boy monocromática, la máquina respondió a las demandas de los usuarios que buscaban una experiencia portátil a todo color sin renunciar a la portabilidad ni a la autonomía.
A nivel técnico y estratégico, la consola destacó por integrar avances notables manteniendo una perfecta continuidad con su predecesora:
Pantalla y procesamiento: Equipaba una pantalla TFT reflectante capaz de mostrar hasta 56 colores simultáneos de una paleta de 32.768. Incorporó un procesador Sharp de 8 bits a 8 MHz (el doble de velocidad que la original) y quadruplicó la memoria RAM del sistema.
Puerto infrarrojo: Introdujo un sensor de comunicación por infrarrojos en la parte superior para el intercambio de datos sin cables entre consolas compatibles.
Retrocompatibilidad total: Ofreció compatibilidad nativa con todo el catálogo de la Game Boy original. Al insertar un cartucho antiguo, el sistema permitía aplicar paletas de color personalizadas a los juegos en blanco y negro.
Su catálogo albergó verdaderos superventas y obras maestras del videojuego portátil. El fenómeno global de Pokémon Gold y Silver explotó al máximo el potencial en color del sistema. Destacaron también títulos memorables como The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages / Oracle of Seasons, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe y Dragon Quest III.
Contabilizada junto a la Game Boy original, la familia sumó más de 118 millones de unidades vendidas en todo el mundo. La Game Boy Color consolidó el dominio absoluto de Nintendo en el mercado portátil antes de ceder el testigo a la nueva generación de 16 bits con la Game Boy Advance.
